Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get started?

You can reach out through email or via my booking link to schedule a free 20-minute consultation or request an initial session. I’ll follow up with everything you need to get started.

What is the difference between a Psychotherapist, Social Worker, and Counsellor?

In Ontario, titles like “Psychotherapist” and “Social Worker” are regulated, while “Counsellor” is a more general term that isn’t legally protected.

Registered Psychotherapists (RPs) are trained mental health professionals regulated by the CRPO. We’re authorized to provide psychotherapy using a range of modalities and must meet strict education, ethics, and supervision standards.

Registered Social Workers (RSWs) are regulated by the OCSWSSW. They also provide therapy but may focus more on systems, advocacy, and community resources in addition to mental health treatment.

Counsellors are not a regulated in Ontario, which means someone using this term may or may not have formal training. Always check credentials and regulatory affiliation when choosing a mental health professional.

Do you diagnose? Do I need a diagnosis or referral to start working with you?

As a Registered Psychotherapist, I do not provide formal diagnoses—only certain professionals in Ontario (like psychologists and psychiatrists) are authorized to diagnose under the Regulated Health Professions Act.

The good news? You don’t need a diagnosis or a referral to begin therapy with me. If you’re struggling, curious, or simply want support, that’s enough. You’re welcome here. That said, if you’re looking to explore a diagnosis (e.g. ADHD), I’m happy to help you navigate that process with another professional while continuing our work together.

Do you take insurance? If so, do you do direct billing?

Many extended health benefit plans offer coverage for sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist (RP). Every plan is different, so I recommend checking with your provider directly to see if  “psychotherapy with an RP” is included in your coverage.

I don’t bill insurance directly, but I do provide official receipts that you can submit for reimbursement.

Some questions you can ask your provider:

  • Is psychotherapy with a Registered Psychotherapist covered?
  • Do I need a doctor’s note or referral for coverage?
  • What is the annual coverage limit?
  • How much of my deductible has been met this year?
  • How do I submit claims for reimbursement?
  • How long does it take for me to receive reimbursement?

What can I expect from the first session?

The first session is a mix of getting to know you and understanding what brought you here. I’ll ask some questions about your background, current challenges, and goals for therapy. There’s no pressure to share everything at once—we’ll move at a pace that feels right for you.

How long does therapy last?

That depends on your goals and what you’re working through. Some clients come for short-term, focused support; others stay longer for deeper healing and integration. We’ll revisit your goals along the way to make sure therapy continues to serve you.

How often do we meet?

Most clients start with weekly or biweekly sessions to build momentum. The frequency can be adjusted based on your needs, schedule, and what you’re working through.

What is your cancellation policy?

I require a minimum of 48 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule a session. Cancellations with less than 48 hours’ notice will be charged a 50% late cancellation fee, while same day cancellations and no-shows are subject to the full session fee.

Will you just listen, or will you actually give me tools?

Both! My therapeutic style is generally more active and goals-oriented. I believe healing happens in relationship, so I will strive to balance between actively listening and holding space for you when you need to process your thoughts, while also equipping you with personalized, evidence-based tools to help you navigate your challenges. My approach is always tailored to meet your unique needs.

What do I do if I am in a state of crisis?

If you are in crisis or feel unsafe, please do not wait for an appointment. Call 911 (or your local emergency number) immediately.
You can also:

  • Call or text 988 in Canada for the Suicide Crisis Helpline (24/7 support)
  • If you’re in Ontario, you can connect with Talk Suicide Canada at 1-833-456-4566

Therapy is not a replacement for emergency services. If you’re in immediate danger of harming yourself or others, or experiencing a mental health crisis, please reach out to one of the numbers above or go to your nearest emergency department.
